Senior Construction Project Manager
Senior Construction Project Manager for an international renewable energy player. Lead major projects across Italy, managing contractors, budgets and delivery, with Milan as the preferred location.
About the Role
Our client, an established international renewable energy company, is looking for an experienced Senior Construction Project Manager to lead the execution of renewable energy projects in Italy.
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing construction activities from the pre-construction phase through to commissioning and final handover, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget and in compliance with technical specifications, quality standards and HSE requirements.
This role requires a strong combination of technical expertise, project management capabilities, commercial awareness and leadership skills, with the ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams, EPC contractors, subcontractors and key stakeholders.
The position will preferably be based in Milan, Italy, with regular travel to project sites.
Key Responsibilities
Project Management & Execution
Lead the end-to-end execution of renewable energy construction projects, from pre-construction planning to commissioning and final handover.
Develop and manage project schedules, budgets, resource allocation and execution strategies.
Monitor project progress, identify potential delays and implement corrective actions to ensure timely delivery.
Ensure that construction activities comply with approved designs, technical specifications, contractual obligations and applicable regulations.
Coordinate interfaces between engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning teams.
Construction & Site Management
Oversee on-site construction activities, ensuring compliance with engineering designs, construction methodologies and project requirements.
Supervise EPC contractors, subcontractors and suppliers, monitoring performance, productivity and contractual compliance.
Coordinate civil works, electrical installations, grid connection activities and balance of plant (BoP) works.
Conduct regular site visits, progress meetings and construction inspections.
Ensure effective management of construction risks, technical issues and operational interfaces.
Budget, Cost Control & Contracts
Manage project budgets, monitor expenditure and ensure effective cost control throughout the construction phase.
Review and monitor EPC contracts, subcontracting agreements, variations, claims and change orders.
Identify cost-saving opportunities while maintaining quality, safety and technical standards.
Prepare project progress reports, cost forecasts and financial updates for senior management.
Support procurement and contract negotiations, where required.
Health, Safety, Environment & Quality
Ensure the implementation of HSE policies and procedures across all construction activities.
Monitor compliance with environmental regulations, quality standards and applicable legislation.
Promote a strong safety culture among contractors, subcontractors and project teams.
Oversee quality assurance and quality control processes, ensuring that all works meet the required standards.
Stakeholder & Team Coordination
Act as the main point of contact for construction-related matters, coordinating internal and external stakeholders.
Work closely with engineering, development, procurement, legal and operations teams to ensure smooth project delivery.
Maintain effective relationships with EPC contractors, grid operators, local authorities, consultants and suppliers.
Lead multidisciplinary project teams, fostering collaboration, accountability and continuous improvement.
Report regularly to senior management on project performance, risks, milestones and key decisions.
Commissioning & Handover
Coordinate testing, commissioning and performance verification activities.
Ensure that all contractual requirements, technical documentation and project deliverables are completed.
Manage the handover of completed projects to the Operations & Maintenance team.
Oversee the resolution of outstanding issues and defects during the handover and warranty periods.
Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, preferably Civil, Electrical, Mechanical or Renewable Energy Engineering.
At least 8–10 years of experience in construction project management within the renewable energy, power generation or infrastructure sectors.
Proven experience managing the construction of large-scale renewable energy projects, ideally in wind or solar PV.
Solid understanding of EPC contracts, BoP, construction methodologies, project scheduling and cost control.
Experience managing contractors, subcontractors and multidisciplinary teams.
Strong knowledge of HSE regulations, quality assurance and environmental compliance.
Experience with project management tools such as MS Project, Primavera P6 or equivalent.
Strong analytical, organisational, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management capabilities.
Fluency in English; Italian language skills are highly desirable.
Willingness to travel regularly to project sites across Italy and, if required, internationally.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in an international renewable energy company or EPC contractor.
Previous involvement in projects from the pre-construction phase through to commissioning.
Knowledge of grid connection, high-voltage infrastructure and electrical balance of plant.
Experience managing multiple projects or complex construction programmes.
Project management certification such as PMP or PRINCE2 is an advantage.
